A woman of very slight importance

My name is Aly and I'm an alcoholic. *cough* Wait, let's start that again...
A 20-something year old from Australia, I'm a funny little kettle of fish who enjoys analyzing Twin Peaks, hanging out in cemeteries, quoting Oscar Wilde, and trying to convince people I am normal (somewhat unsuccessfully). Other loves include geeky science puns, adjectives beginning with the prefix in-, and people who don't say 'who?' when I proclaim The Smiths to be the greatest band in history. Rap music, cricket, the meat industry and reality TV shows are evil and must be stopped. In the Alyverse, MorrisseyBow down and worship him! is a God and should be worshipped as such. [Not scared off yet?]

Unfortunately, jIyajbe’ tlhlngan

Sunday 28th February, 2010 - 9:37pm

  • Feeling: a bit stressed
  • Listening to: “Whip it” – Devo
  • The weather outside: 299 Kelvins :)
  • Mantra of the day: I doubt, therefore I might be

If you don’t know what “jIyajbe’ tlhlngan” means (*gasp* how could you not?), it’s Klingon for “I don’t understand Klingon”. Sure, my (fake) resume claims I speak it fluently, but like most people, I was just lying to improve my (imaginary) job prospects. ;) I am starting to learn a few phrases here and there though, thanks to The Klingon language institue and Hol ‘ampaS – I can say nuqneH, qaStaH nuq? (meaning “Hello, what’s happening?”), but more importantly, essential phrases like nuqjatlh?, jIyajbe’ and nuqDaq ‘oH puchpa”e’ (“Huh?”, “I don’t understand” and “Where is the bathroom?” respectively), which should help me somewhat if I ever end up lost in Kronos and need to pee. :P Unfortunately though, my pronounciation is positively horrendous. All the sounds that require unusual mouth and tongue movements seem to come out sounding like a footballer spitting on the field at half-time, or worse, no sound comes out at all. :( Maybe I should stick to learning French. *sigh* Though the sad thing is that I actually know almost as much Klingon now as I do French…so you can imagine it’s not much at all. Oh well, best yet would probably be perfecting my English, lol. Heavens knows I should try to master that first, haha. :)

Back to more earthly matters though, I had my (Dis)Orientation Day at uni last Thursday. Even though I’m not actually a first-year student, it’s my first year studying science at this university, so I went along anyway and tried to blend in. :) I actually did have to be there for a while to go to a lab safety seminar (which I’d been told was a lab safety test, but apparently the only on-campus bit was a boring seminar and the test was just an easy online quiz – sweet!). As well as the lab safety seminar (during which I embarrassed myself by tripping down the steps in the lecture theatre – way to stay safe, huh?), I also went to the faculty & lab tour, and attended an information session for the commencing biomed students. I was quite shocked to see how few people are actually studying this course (there would have been a couple of hundred people at the general science faculty sessions, but there would probably only be 30-35 biomed students, tops), but the info session itself was actually really interesting…and dare I say, exciting! I must have looked like such a dork, sitting there with this look of rapture as the professor told us about her research (she’s growing a human heart from adult stem cells – how kickass is that?!) and about all the other projects going on in the biomed community. It was really motivating, and I’m so glad I went to that as well as just the compulsory lab safety thing.

One interesting thing I did note when we were looking at these electron microscopy pictures, is that up close (very very close!), a white blood cell looks exactly like a Raffaelo chocolate. No kidding, the resemblance is quite amazing! I don’t know how widespread the popularity of Raffaelo chocolates is though (they’re made by the company that makes Ferrero Rocher and so forth), so I got some pictures from Google Images and put them side by side for you to compare.

Cool, huh? There were some other really cool electron microscopy pictures we saw too, including some really pretty colourful ones that remind me of those fractal graphics people make in Photoshop, but I couldn’t find the same ones online. :( Bummer…I wanted to use one for my desktop background, hehe.

Anyway, moving on, I’ve updated the poetry section today. Yes, yet again! What’s left behind, Murdering a dead man, Zoo, Senseless, The whole house is an attic, Tearing down the sky and Requiem for Lana are all new, and as expected, the usual teaser. I’ve been watching U2′s Zoo Tour, lol. :)

Zoo

I believe you, do you believe me?
we’re going to watch the world end
on a big plasma screen TV
and with high definition audio
the trumpet sounding will be
crystal clear
so clear!

I believe you, do you believe me?
I place my trust in the hands of politicians
and oh, I know that when I hunger
they will feed me
all the sweet lies that keep me nourished
and when I’m ill it will only be because
I put my tick in the wrong box
my mistake!

I believe you, do you believe me?
there’s a golden star within my reach
if I pay the price they’re asking
and I will walk with flowers
blooming at my feet
if I wear that shade of lipstick
and drink their brand of cola

I believe you, do you believe me?
please stop it if you do
because everything I know is wrong

And before I go, a few more questions for you. :)

Random question: Do you ever dunk food in your coffee (or tea)?
YES. Give me some sort of sweet carb cookie thing and I shall be the dunk master.

Lol Caity, you are so sweet. I’m glad I somehow manage to amuse you. :)

  2. Jamie says:

Wow that is crazy up close and personal my goodness! Haha! Now I will never try that chocolate! It looks like it has some coconut on it does it? Haha if it does I’m definately not trying it!

Lol Be Excellent To Each Other is a quote from my favorite movie “Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure”! How’d you know that?

Random question : Do you ever dunk food into your coffee (or tea)?
    A. Yup, if it’s cookies or donuts than yup

Another random question : What is your favorite cartoon strip? (Online or print)
    A. The peanuts and Marmaduke I also love “Kathy” and “Family Circus” (I think that’s what it’s called.).

    • Aly says:

Yeah, the chocolate has coconut on it. It’s really yummy though!

Lol Be Excellent To Each Other is a quote from my favorite movie “Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure”! How’d you know that?
It’s one of my favourite movies too! ^_^ I’m a big Bill and Ted fan. :)

  3. Vanessa says:

Random question: Do you ever dunk food in your coffee (or tea)? – I don’t drink coffee often but even when I do, I don’t dunk anything in it. My mom does however. Give her a cookie and she’ll dunk the hell out of it, lol

Another random question: What is your favourite cartoon strip? (Online or print) – I can’t think of the name at this minute, but it’s in our local Sunday Times.. I don’t read it much anymore though..

    tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh’a’? Umm..

Good luck on going back to school. Get some great grades! :)

Those two pics really do look the same. I love coconut by the way. :)

  4. Woah, sciences… Haha, it’s interesting, but not for me. LOL. Good luck, and LOL, the sciences are popular majors, so I’m not surprised that there were a lot of people there. LOL.

    # Random question: Do you ever dunk food in your coffee (or tea)?
    No

    # Another random question: What is your favourite cartoon strip? (Online or print)
I don’t read those anymore. I used to read “Family Circus”, as well as some others that I don’t remember at the top of my head…

    # tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh’a
    ? LOL.

  5. Deanna says:

Have fun at school! I always find the first day of classes to be pretty exciting.

As for dunking food in my coffee or tea, I do not. In fact, I don’t drink either of those beverages. And if I did, I still don’t think I would dunk anything in them. I like to keep my drinks and my eats separate.

    • Aly says:

I actually like to keep my drinks and eats separate too – I can’t stand dunking things in my drinks (hence why I asked!). I prefer the taste of coffee WITHOUT half an Oreo floating around in pieces, lol. Actually when I was a kid I also used to try to keep individual foods separate too, like not letting the peas touch the mashed potatoes and what-not…no wonder my parents thought I was mad. :P I don’t do that anymore though.

  6. Whitters says:

Your spam protection scared me. I was like “I’m good at math, but this is going to take FOREVER” lol.

Is it strange that I’m completely weirded out by that chocolate now and will probably never be able to eat one?

    # Random question: Do you ever dunk food in your coffee (or tea)?
Nope.. Pretty much because I don’t drink coffee and rarely ever drink tea.. Even if i did, I don’t think I’d dunk anything in them…

    # Another random question: What is your favourite cartoon strip? (Online or print)
I don’t read many cartoon strips, either online or in print. But I read a lot of webcomics which are sorta like strips… My favorite is Questionable Content

    tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh’a’?
    ….um… No?

    • Aly says:

Your spam protection scared me. I was like “I’m good at math, but this is going to take FOREVER” lol.
Lol, the question is supposed to look a lot harder at first glance than it actually is. It’s just cos 32 or 0, depending on whether you count cos 32 as part of the bit 4x is multiplied by (because x=0 automatically makes it all 0). I know, I’m lame. :P

Ooh, I haven’t heard of Questionable Content, but the name alone intrigues me. ;) Must check it out!

  7. monkee says:

Yay! You’re gonna be a nerdy dork like me (meaning in the nicest possible way)…but those heavy textbooks you’re going to have to carry, I’ll shut up here lulx.

    Study hard.

PS: Don’t you get floaties in your coffee/tea if you dunk biscuits in it?

    • Aly says:

Monkee, I’m already a nerdy dork like you! Hahaha. Don’t mention the heavy textbooks… *glares while rubbing sore shoulder* :P

And yeah, you do end up with floaties – that’s why I don’t like to dunk things in my drinks. =/ It’s gross having bits of soggy cookie floating around in your coffee!

  8. Julie says:

You should submit that to “totally looks like” an icanhascheezeburger production. hehe. I think it’s funny how you start off your blog with something so random! Good poem! too bad there’s too many people in the world who really do think that everything will be handed to them on a silver platter.

    • Aly says:

That’s a good idea! I might do that later on. I’m a sucker for those Cheezeburger productions. :)

I’m glad you liked the poem, btw!

  9. Charley says:

Haha I’ve never heard of those chocolates, but if I ever eat one I will think of that and laugh quietly to myself :)

growing a human heart is pretty cool, not gonna lie!

good luck going back to uni, sure you’ll have a tonne of fun :)

Random question: Do you ever dunk food in your coffee (or tea)?
yeah, pretty much anything i have to hand. i’m a pretty disgusting person lmfao.

Another random question: What is your favourite cartoon strip? (Online or print)
definately cyanide and happiness, it’s so funny i love it :)

    tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh’a’?
yeah i tried to work this out going on the translations you gave at the top of this blog. i failed!

    • Aly says:

Haha I’ve never heard of those chocolates, but if I ever eat one I will think of that and laugh quietly to myself :)
Haha, I do that too sometimes…I’ll suddenly giggle or get this silly grin on my face remembering something random like that. People give me funny looks then. :( Lol.

Woot, Cyanide and Happiness! I’ve been meaning to stick one of their cartoons up in the guest bathroom…it’s got a toilet saying to the guy walking in: “I’m sick and tired of your shit!”. :haha: It still makes me giggle!

  10. Gel says:

    # Random question: Do you ever dunk food in your coffee (or tea)?
I used to dunk bread in my coffee and cream :)
    # Another random question: What is your favourite cartoon strip? (Online or print)
I used to love reading Garfield but then I stopped. Oh well.
    # tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh’a’?
    I don’t understand Klingon, sorry :(

It’s awesome that you spotted something that looks like a white blood cell in chocolate form! Haha that’s super cool! And it’s also cool that your teacher’s researching about growing a human heart with the use of adult stem cells. Now that’s AMAZING.

  11. Angelica says:

Oh wow the things you’re going to study… They sound quite terrifying to me who haven’t studied either Chemistry, Physics or Biology since junior high. Whenever I come across someone who’s actually studying things like that I feel slightly inferior because in my mind anyone who masters such things must be some kind of genius. Are you a genius Aly?

I LOVE your poem! That’s what the world is like! That’s what life is like! Brilliant!

Random question: Do you ever dunk food in your coffee (or tea)?
    No, never.

Another random question: What is your favourite cartoon strip? (Online or print)
    Nemi.

    tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh’a’
I don’t speak Klingon. Quenya and Sindarin I’m fluid in though. Namarie Aly mellon nin!

    • Aly says:

No, I’m fairly positive I’m not a genius! Lol. I’m just nerdy and like the sciences. But I appreciate the sentiment regardless!

And I’m glad you like the poem! Thank you. :)

I admit I’d never heard of Quenya or Sindarin before, so it wasn’t until I googled them that I realized they were the Elvish languages from LOTR. That’s awesome! Aiya meldomelin! :)

  12. tiff k says:

Im soo excited for you aly!! Woot first day high again! xD and I can tell that you really love science! Man that is fascinating! I have a science subject now and I love it! :D hehe must study for our long exam on Monday! GACK! hehee

LOLZ XD XD SOO FUNNY! especially with that caption!! Haha thanks for sharing it!

Good luck my dear friend! UPDATE UUS!! :D

    • Aly says:

Eeek, good luck with your exam Tiff! And yeah, I really do love the sciences. I just find it really fascinating, especially the human biology stuff. :)

  13. Stepherz says:

I think in today’s day and age, Klingon would be much more useful. After all, according to Futurama, French will be a dead language in 3000.

I think you have just reaffirmed my belief chocolate should be a part of every meal.

    • Aly says:

After all, according to Futurama, French will be a dead language in 3000.
That’s right! And apparently anchovies will become extinct too. :D Lol, I love Futurama.
