A woman of very slight importance

My name is Aly and I'm an alcoholic. *cough* Wait, let's start that again...
A 20-something year old from Australia, I'm a funny little kettle of fish who enjoys analyzing Twin Peaks, hanging out in cemeteries, quoting Oscar Wilde, and trying to convince people I am normal (somewhat unsuccessfully). Other loves include geeky science puns, adjectives beginning with the prefix in-, and people who don't say 'who?' when I proclaim The Smiths to be the greatest band in history. Rap music, cricket, the meat industry and reality TV shows are evil and must be stopped. In the Alyverse, MorrisseyBow down and worship him! is a God and should be worshipped as such. [Not scared off yet?]

Why so serious?

Thursday 17th December, 2009 - 10:36pm

I still haven’t entirely snapped out of the serious, contemplative mood I was in last entry. My mind’s been working overtime (maybe to compensate for having been so slack for years? haha) just pondering, for lack of a better way to phrase it. My mother’s quite fond of telling me that my brain is rotting (oh noes! quick, blame TV and video games!) and if you don’t use it, you lose it, though I’m quite convinced it’s already far too late for that. :P But reluctant as I am to admit it, I can see her point of view. I’m completely understimulated in an intellectual sense, because frankly I just don’t really do anything that involves much thought. The past two years of uni haven’t even been much use in that regard because my studies (I was doing a business degree, remember?) were so boring and so far from what I actually wanted to do (ie. science) that I didn’t really give it any more thought than was absolutely necessary and certainly didn’t retain anything from my classes by the end of the semester. I’m actually really looking forward to next semester when I’ll be doing something more stimulating, because right now I feel like my brain is just flailing desperately on the ground at my feet (probably covered in bits of dust and cookie crumbs, hehe), as illustrated by the badly-drawn cartoon to the right. :P And yes, I know I can’t draw, lol. Art of any sort has never been a talent of mine – I’m inclined to believe the only reason I even passed the subject in high school (well, for the one year I actually took it, and only because it was compulsory) was because I turned in complete and utter rubbish and called it “abstract”, and hey, you can’t argue with abstract art! I mean, what if that page full of random scribbles and cut-outs from a coloured-in math grid book are actually signs of artistic genius and you just brushed it off as a load of crap put together on the bus ride to school by a lazy 13 year old who didn’t want to get into trouble for not doing her homework?! (And yes, that actually was one of my “art projects” in 8th grade – a page full of chopped up math grids that I’d coloured in out of boredom, one side in bright colours and the other side in black and grey. It hinted at grand ideas like good vs evil, virtue vs sin and a bipolar personality, even though the real deeper meaning was “I hate this subject, please stop wasting my time with these assignments!”). My 13 year old self was a complete tool, lol.

So, now that I plan to start using my brain a little more (assuming I can find it when the times comes, hehe), I thought it was only fitting to look the part with my new (fake) glasses, because I simply must feed into the nerd stereotype the media insists on encouraging! Aren’t they spiffy? (See left). Completely unnecessary of course and I can’t even see out of them (they’re non-prescription reading glasses from the pharmacy and even the lowest magnification is too strong), but considering I only bought them as a joke and don’t actually intend to wear them I guess it doesn’t matter. :P And yes, that plushie I’m holding in the picture is supposed to be Albert Einstein! Hehe.

In other news, I put up my mini Christmas tree last weekend. :) Well, ‘putting it up’ is probably a little misleading since the tree is about a foot and a half high and just folds out and clips on to the plastic base, but it sounds better than “I took it out of the plastic wrapper and unfolded it”, lol. As you can see, my tree is a little…non-traditional. I’ve pimped it out with Little Miss, Simpsons and Star Wars figurines and my “star” is a small Mr Potato Head, hehe. Oh well, it may not be traditional but it’s Alyish. ;) And yes, I am recycling my pictures today from my Project 365 at Sillius Soddus. I’m lazy, you should know that by now. :P

I’ve also been writing again. *cue groans* Yes that’s right folks, today’s your lucky day – more crappy poetry! Please, no need to thank me, I’m just doing it because I care (about myself). All the newbies can be found under the “shiny new stuff” section of the poetry page – there are 7 of them this time. And there are samples of course. Free samples for all! I feel like I’m hosting a Try-Out Tuesday in the local supermarket. ;)

Y not?

some rules are pointless
damaging to obey
it doesn’t always pay
to do as you are told

he says he’s not afraid
(he’s lying)
he says he’s not ashamed
(it’s untrue)
and you tempt him more than you will ever know
and given time he’ll stop resisting

they preach it’s wrong
(says who?)
they say he’s making a mistake
(he’s not)
and what’s the point in lying
to everyone but yourself?

stop thinking, start feeling
let go of everything that holds you back
just ask yourself…
Y not?

Pretty pile of atoms

I was taught not to be shallow
and that everyone is equal
all fashioned from the same design
the same matter at our cores

but I fancy that you’re different
that you shine like no one else
and you’re the prettiest pile of atoms
I’ve ever seen

Anyway, that’s it for tonight. I braved my local mall earlier this evening and still haven’t quite recovered from the ordeal (the shops are hellish at this time of year!), so I’m going to sprawl out on the couch and eat ice-cream for a while to relax. :P Adios amigos. Be excellent to each other!

LMAO @ the nerdy glasses. Yes, use your noggin more. Read more good books. Fun and brain-using, right? :) I really like the prettiest pile of atoms poem :) really cute use of science for a compliment!

    • Aly says:

Thanks Julie. :) Ah, my poor noggin is feeling a little overwhelmed now that I’ve brought it out of hibernation, lol. I can practically hear it shouting “piss off, let me go back to sleep!”.
Actually on second thought, that might be my brother. :P

  2. Marianne says:

    Interestingly decorated Christmas tree. XD

  3. About the “if you don’t use it, you lose it” thing, that is quite true. My math skills are HORRIBLE! Well, in terms of higher math, like Calculus or something like that. LOL.

Hahaha, you draw A LOT better than I do! I can’t draw if my life depended on it!!!

    Haha, nice tree =P

  4. Christine says:

If you’re not going to read then you should do puzzles. I buy those cheapo word search books in the grocery store for like 99 cents. If you do those every day…even for a few minutes it boosts your mind up.

READ!!!!!! Please? For me? The future English teacher?

I love your tree and your glasses. I had a fake pair back in the day (even though I have real ones, wtf?)

    • Aly says:

That’s a good point – I actually do do puzzles sometimes (like sudoku and those brain teaser things in the newspaper), but probably not as often as I should. -_-

And I do plan to read a bit more now since I discovered I actually CAN read, hehehe. I might see if I can buy some more books at the post-Christmas sales, because I don’t really have a lot of them (and I’m banned from my local library because I kept losing theirs, haha). :)

  5. vanessa says:

I’m really diggin’ your christmas tree. It actually looks better then ours. Our tree has seen better days. You can actually see through it. lol

  6. Brandy says:

That tree is adorable. I wanted to put up a small tree in my room, but I’ve been so sick, I haven’t had the energy to. :)

    • Aly says:

Aww, sorry you’ve been sick. Maybe you could get someone else to put up a tree for you to cheer you up? I know it sounds a bit silly, but looking at my weird, tacky little tree really does make me smile…especially when my dog keeps sniffing it because he wants to eat the candy canes, hehe.

  7. Natasha says:

I most definitly know how you feel when it comes to those kind of semesters in college. I deff have one last semester.. not nearly because I hated the classes but just.. a new move, new social life.. I kind of lost interest all together, but I’m also looking forward to next semester too.

    HOT. glasses for sure.

Your Christmas tree is way cute. Loving the Potato star.. AND i just realizd potato doesn’t have an E on the end of it.. hmph. I always thought it did.

Pretty poems. I love reading/writing poems.

Thank you for the comment and I’m uber glad you enjoyed my site!

    • Aly says:

Lol, when you mentioned the potato spelling I couldn’t help but think of former US Vice President Dan Quayle…I remember reading years ago that he made an ass of himself once by insisting potato had an ‘e’ on the end while visiting an elementary school. XD

And I’m glad you liked the poems. :)

  8. Kristine says:

What a cute and awesome Christmas tree! Very unique, especially the Mr. Potato Head at the top :D
I really like the poems, Y Not? is really good :)

  9. Jenn says:

I need to take my brain out and use it more often as well. I should look into taking some classes or something. I love your Christmas tree, and I think you’re extremely brave for going to a MALL so close to Christmas. You risked your life for a noble cause … shopping..

    • Aly says:

Lol, you’re so right – nothing gets the adrenaline rushing like trying to push through the crowds in a department store 1 week before Christmas…and for real thrill-seekers, there’s always racing up and down the aisles of a supermarket ten minutes before the store closes while trying not to run over little kids or knock over canned food displays. :P

Woot, I do feel brave now, hehe.

  10. Caity says:

Haha I love your tree. You are so adorable. Your ornaments and Mr. Potato Head at the top are brilliant. I love your new glasses. They look cute, too.

  11. Gillian says:

K so anyways, now that the math tragedy is over.. I’m glad that you enjoyed my list so much. :P Hahahah, I’m proud to be the one who got that image stuck in your head. Now you’ll probably never forget that blog.. xD.

You’re very lucky that you’ve never had to encounter those robot babies before. I hope you never have to go through that experience. :P

I’m pretty sure I lost my brain a long time ago, because I stopped using it a long time ago. xD So don’t worry you ain’t the only one.

I’m sure you will enjoy your next semester more. I don’t think you’re bad at drawing btw, I don’t think I would have been able to do anything that looked even close to as good as your little cartoon. :P

I fail at drawing. Very badly. :)

AWEEHH cute glasses! I love that pictures, it’s so adorable haha, and the little Einstein is just awesome.

The mini Christmas tree looks great. Well decorated. :)

  12. Charley says:

Hahah I love the tree! :) And the mr potato head, genius:) My fairy is the one and only barbie I recieved from some dim witted friend one year when I was about 6. My gran turned it into the fairy when I expressed no interest in it. It always makes me laugh cos it’s Ice Skating Barbie so she looks sort of out of place but well one can’t complain :)

Those glasses make you look cute ;)

and that second poem is gorgeous! I love it :) totally my kind of thing. :) :) xo

    • Aly says:

Lol, you weren’t a Barbie girl in a Barbie world then, Charley? I’m trying to picture an ice skating Barbie with fairy wings now, hehe. I wish I still had my old Barbies now so that I could redesign them with my own creations…I want to make a mad scientist Barbie with a little white labcoat and singed hair and a few missing fingers. :P

Glad you liked the poem too. :) I can’t resist throwing geeky terminology like that into everything, hehe.

  13. Daniella says:

Hahaha Mr. Potato Head tree topper. Nice. Non traditional trees are always more fun! They have much more personality!
